Here is what the judges said:

They like the videographer's style to operate the video camera... clean and steady shots (Network Style) has always been a favorite.

While it is difficult to shoot a story that has already happened and limited elements are still on scene... the photog made the most and concentrated on what is available and take the most of them when possible. The judges would love to see more details...especially of the flowers and pictures....and use the water element even more. Advice for new photogs please don't be afraid to do "details."

Here is what the judges said:

The photographer could be improving by working on framing the shots, lights....and editing. Look for ways to tell the stories in a different way.

Student Still Photojournalist of the Year- Winner, sponsored by Nikon and the Past Presidents and Retired Members Scholarship Fund

Jon Putman, Santa Monica College

Here is what the judges said:

The first-place winner edged out the runner up with a slightly stronger photo story. The Photojournalist showed skill in all categories. The photographs were consistently well composed, including clean backgrounds helping to make the images immediately impactful upon viewing. This photographer could show their work to a news outlet or potential employer with confidence, knowing that improvement is a matter of continuing the effort and passion that is apparent in the capturing of these images.

Student Still Photojournalist of the Year 2022- Runner-up

Caylo Seals, Santa Monica College

Here is what the judges said:

With an emotional feature photo and solid images in all categories, the runner-up Photojournalist’s entry is a standout. The photo essay is a compelling human interest story. With more time spent with the subject, there would undoubtedly be additional dynamic photographs to tell the story in greater depth. There could be some closer attention to cropping and composition, but overall, the photographer has a good sense of what makes a strong image.
