Quarter 3 judges: Kent Porter and Christopher Chung

General News

All winners are good moments with good access, especially during the memorials. Tough to photograph in these situations obviously, but the images show a great deal of respect for those grieving.

Feature

Strong category. Images which placed are simple, quiet moments with good use of reflection in three of the frames. Judges loved the first place the most.  The image of the hand reflected in the water makes it.  Would've done well in Pictorial.

Portrait

Fun category to judge, the first-place image is a strong black and white portrait which brought us back time and again for additional info. Second place could have been cropped tighter for more impact. Third place is a great graphic type of image. HM had a lot of emotion to it. I bet there is a story behind that.

Pictoral

Decent discussion in pictorial category.  First and second especially. What separated the two ultimately came down to the crop. Judges felt the skyline photo would have placed in the top spot but the tree on the right side was a deciding factor for second, but it's a pretty nice image.  First place was a clean, moody image of a bagpiper. Nice find. Third is a nice rodeo pic and the decision to go with the high key lighting worked.  All three frames are worthy of the top spot.

Spot News

The discussion about first and second was lengthy, but ultimately the emotion in the first place image was more impactful.  Third place of crowd control tactics is a nice moment, however, the lack of emotion on either side of the focal point pushed the entry down.

Entertainment

First place was unanimous from the get go. Good framing, composition and use of color.  The black and white second place entry is a moody, nice moment, also would have placed in Portrait category. Third is an amusing moment, now we know how everyone gets the names right during endless red carpet moments.

Sports Features

Celebration images ruled the day with clean, nice moments from four of the winners. The HM hockey image was a quick moment, probably would have been helped by cropping the referee out.  All photographs are great moments and judges had trouble placing the top three.  Ultimately, awards were given for moments which had easy reads.

Sports Action

Really tough category.  Football images were top notch, but several were from the same play of a football game which cancelled each other out.  However, all good daily sports front images. The first place rodeo image was clean; the tight crop on the horse was impactful. Second of a baseball dive was the better of two such images, but second was a quicker read.  Third from a volleyball match was a good moment from a terribly difficult sport to photograph.

Fire

Only few entries, most involving the Dragon Bravo Fire. The question which came up is, it must have been a really long drive if you couldn't fly.   Honorable mention goes to a house fire with nice composition.
