General News
First was nice graphic image with mural and police. There were a few of these images, but this was the cleanest. Second, nice clean graduation event moment. Third, person holding a mirror with Marine reflected had several clean layers. HMs were both nice moments.
Feature
First young Green Day nice side moment to the main event. Second was a nice graduation moment with layers. Third was good pictorial type feature with good light.
Portrait
First, nicely lit, nice moment from what could have been a boring assignment. Second, another nice, graphic portrait with good light and pictorial qualities from another average assignment. Third, haunting image with great graphic qualities and light. All of the winners + HMs in this category make you want to read the stories that go with them, which is not always the case when you think about a portrait category.
Pictoral
First place was a great, graphic graduation and a nice all around photo with true pictorial qualities. Second is another nice graphic photo with a nice moment. Third, the classic plane through full moon photo well done. Size of plane works well.
Spot News
This was the strongest category with all the historic protest photos. A lot of great photos in this group. First and second were top peak action photos from the downtown protest. They were done differently, but both were clean and told the story. Third at first look seems busy, but after looking at it for a while it has so many layers. Would need to run big to get full effect. Another really nice clean frame from the big event. HM1 Another nice clean photo and peak moment from protest. HM2, nice graphic scene with great light at the protests. There were a lot of great photos in the category and many could have won.
Entertainment
This category was slim on entries. Winners all had nice moments and light.
Sports Features
First, super nice tightly cropped, graphic photo of hands and basketball. Very unique photo. Second, another great photo. Four players lined up nicely with graphic nature. Third, nice, clean game-winning photo. Great moment. HM, nice tight crop of emotional play.
Sports Action
First, great moment and clean photo of race winner. Second, nice tight crop and graphic image with player looking at ball. Third, great peak action moment with light and background working for the photographer. HM, dang those Dodgers throwing at our star player again. Nice moment.
Fire
No awards given for the fire category. Judges felt the images were too weak.
