Student Scholarship/Photojournalist of the Year 2019

Submission of Entries

All photographs must have been taken between January 1, 2019 and January 1, 2020.

Photographs in black and white or color are eligible. Entries may include photos from internships, or part-time work held during the calendar year. No digital alterations of photographs are permitted.

All photos submitted once may not be resubmitted in any other competition year.

Categories

There are five categories: News (a planned or unplanned event)
Sports (action and feature)
Feature Single (a found situation or illustration)
Portrait/Personality (an interesting picture of a person)
Multiple Picture Story or Series (any story or set of related photos including sports)

Entries must be JPEG images. NO PRINTS or SLIDES. One image for each category.

Up to 10 images for the Picture Story/Series. Each category must be represented in the portfolio.

Please note that Picture Story/Series may consist of no more than 10 photos. The Picture Story/Series will count as a single entry.

Preparation of Entries and Eligibility

1. The Student Photojournalist of the Year Competition is open to all students in good standing.

Membership in the Press Photographers Association of Greater Los Angeles is required.

2. Students must be enrolled currently as part-time or full-time students in either a community college or a four-year school, public or private.

3. Entries must be received by Rick Meyer, no later than 5 p.m. on January 20, 2020.

4. Each entry must be the work of a single photographer.

5. Entries must be JPEG images of published or unpublished work. All entries should be scanned at 200 DPI resolution, with the longest dimension not exceeding 10 inches.

Caption information should be included under “File Info” category in Photoshop. Slug each image with YOUR INITIALS, CATEGORY and NUMBER (for photo essay). Category, student name and college must be included with the scanned images.

6. Use the contest entry form which includes the photographers name, category, school, telephone number, and a brief caption.

8. Individual photos from Picture Story/Series cannot be entered separately in another category.

9. The winner will be an honored guest of the Press Photographers at their 84th Annual Awards in early 2020.

10. The Scholarship is sponsored by PPAGLA Member Richard Turner, Past-Presidents and Retired Members. In past years Nikon and donated a first prize. First place award is $1,500. Runner up gets $1,000.
