2018 Exposures in Journalism Rules and Entry


Sponsored by The Corsair, SMC’s student publication, the SMC Photo Department and The Press Photographers of Greater Los Angeles (PPAGLA).

Show Date: September 16, 2018.

Show will include the student winning entries and the First-Place professional winners from the PPAGLA 2016 competition.

Any student who has produced work from June 2017 to May 2018, from any college or university residing in a county that touches a 100-mile radius of Los Angeles City Hall.

Entrants must provide a teacher confirmation contact to verify eligibility.

Site Opens: Thursday, April 26, 2018

Upload: Deliver to contest site by midnight Friday, June 1, 2018.

Judging: Completed by Monday, June 11, 2018.

Results: Finalists announced at noon Monday, July 18, 2018 after verification of student status. Place winners announced the night of the show.

Print Delivery: Winning image prints delivered between 12 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. August 31, 2018. Unmounted or poorly printed photos will not be included in the show.

Photo Categories:
Maximum of three entries per category.
If more than three are entered only the first three will be considered.

General News(GenNews)

  • An organized event known in advance. Examples - demonstrations, political events, press conferences.

Spot News (Spot)

  • An unscheduled or breaking event. Examples - fires, accidents, crime scenes.

Sports Action (SPO)

  • A photograph capturing peak action or the competitive nature of a sport.

Sports Feature (SPOFeat)

  • A sports related photograph that reflects the importance of sports in the lives of fans and players. Example: Jubilation, defeat, and sports culture.

Portrait (PORT)

  • A photograph revealing the subject's character or personality.

Feature (FEAT)

  • A found situation containing strong human interest.

Entertainment (ENT)

  • Music and performing arts. Examples - Concerts, performances.

Photo Story 

  • Max 10 photos per story / Max 2 stories per photographer


  • A visual journalism story to provide insight into social, cultural or political observations that utilizes video, still photos and audio in a compelling presentation.  One story per entrant. 2 to 10 minutes in length.



  • The contest is open to all regional students who have produced work during the time the entrant was enrolled in an eligible school between from June 2017 to May 2018
  • Eligible schools are: any college or university residing in a county that touches a 100 mile radius of Los Angeles City Hall.
  • Prior publication of photos or multimedia is NOT required.
  • Do not expect judges to re-categorize misfiled images.
  • By entering the contest the photographer gives permission to reproduce the photo(s) in the Corsair News and the PPAGLA publications, web site and promotional material related to the contest. Copyrights remain with the photographer.
