PPAGLA members join me in congratulating our new board members for the next two years: Robyn Beck, Gerard Burkhart, Ringo Chiu, Khai Le, John McCoy, David Seger and Jason Wittman (alternate). They will be joining our current board members Paul Buck, Jim Caccavo, Louis Gabriele, Diandra Jay, Kirk McKoy, Nancy Newman and Jim Ober.
Robyn Beck is the chief photographer for Agence France-Presse (AFP) in the news agency's Los Angeles bureau. She joined AFP in July 1991 as a photo editor in Hong Kong. Previous to AFP she freelanced for the Associated Press.
Gerard Burkhart is a returning board member. He has won numerous awards including 3 Pulitzer Prize winning group entries with the Los Angeles Times. Gerard teaches photojournalism classes at Santa Monica College and teaches both photojournalism and photography at Pierce College.
Ringo Chiu has been an alternate board member this past year. He is currently the chief photographer for the Los Angeles Business Journal and freelances for AP, the Los Angeles Times, Xinhua News Agency and Zuma Press.
Khai Le was a 2011 PPAGLA Student Photojournalist of the Year winner. He is a recent graduate of the Art Center College of Design where he majored in photography. Khai works on a number of projects for PPAGLA and has redesigned our new website.
John McCoy is a veteran member of the PPAGLA and has served on the board in a variety of rolls for much of the past 20 years. He also completed two terms as president in 2007. John is currently a staff photographer at the Los Angeles Daily News.
David Seger has 40 years of news experience ranging from photojournalist to news operations supervisor. 32 of those years were spent at KNBC TV. Previous to KNBC-TV he was the News Operations Manager/Chief Photographer at WCKT-TV in Miami, Florida.
Jason Wittman (Alternate Board Member) is a retired press photographer. He is a long time member of PPAGLA and has been on the Board of Directors for the past two years. Jason continues to work on special projects for PPAGLA.
All of these board members bring a lot of experience to our association and should be congratulated on their achievements.
Associate Membership Description Change
The associate membership description has also been changed to:
An Associate Member shall be a major contributor such as a professional instructor who is a supporter of the arts and communications / journalism / photo-journalists; professional photography vendors, professional photography organizations, public information officers for any public safety agencies, public relation specialists, news publications, television reporters and content producers. An Associate Member is a non-voting, non-office holding member of the PPAGLA. The application for an Associate Membership will be reviewed by the membership committee and if approved will be placed before the Board of Directors for final approval.
