2016 UCLA Scrimmage. SMC Corsair news photo editor Daniel Bowyer is the 2015 and 2016 PPAGLA Finalist Student Photojournalist of the Year. Bowyer has been hired by the NFL Los Angeles Rams football team as an assistant photographer for the upcoming 2017 season.

Exposures in Journalism

The 2017 Photojournalism Show at Santa Monica College.

Region wide call for student entries.

Sponsored by The Corsair, SMC’s student publication, the SMC Photo Department and The Press Photographers of Greater Los Angeles (PPAGLA).

Show Date: Saturday, September 16, 2017.

Show will include the student winning entries and the First-Place professional winners from the PPAGLA 2016 competition.

Eligibility
Any student who has produced work from September 2015 to May 2017, from any college or university residing in a county that touches a 100-mile radius of Los Angeles City Hall.

Entrants must provide a teacher confirmation contact to verify eligibility.

Editing workshop

Saturday, May 20, 2017 11-2 p.m. Corsair Newsroom, Letters and Science. Advice on best images in your portfolio. Bring digital files. 20 images max.

DEADLINES: 

 Upload: Deliver to contest site by midnight Friday, June 16, 2017. EXTENDED TO Sunday, June 25, 2017.

Judging: Completed by Friday, June 30, 2017.

Results: Finalists announced at noon Friday, July 14, 2017 after verification of student status. Winners announced the night of the show.

Each Category will have a First Place and two finalists.

Print Delivery: Winning image prints delivered by 5:00 p.m. Thursday, August 31, 2017. Unmounted or poorly printed photos will not be included in the show.

 

Photo Categories:
Maximum of three entries per category.

General News(GenNews)

  • An organized event known in advance. Examples - demonstrations, political events, press conferences.

Spot News (Spot)

  • An unscheduled or breaking event. Examples - fires, accidents, crime scenes.

Sports Action (SPO)

  • A photograph capturing peak action or the competitive nature of a sport.

Sports Feature (SPOFeat)

  • A sports related photograph that reflects the importance of sports in the lives of fans and players. Example: Jubilation, defeat, and sports culture.

Portrait (PORT)

  • A photograph revealing the subject's character or personality.

Feature (FEAT)

  • A found situation containing strong human interest.

Entertainment (ENT)

  • Music and performing arts. Examples - Concerts, performances.

Photo Story 

  • Max 10 photos per story / Max 2 stories per photographer

Multimedia

  • A visual journalism story to provide insight into social, cultural or political observations that utilizes video, still photos and audio in a compelling presentation.  One story per entrant. 2 to 10 minutes in length.


RULES

  • The contest is open to all regional students who have produced work during the time the entrant was enrolled in an eligible school between from September 2015 to May 2017
     
  • Eligible schools are: any college or university residing in a county that touches a 100 mile radius of Los Angeles City Hall.
     
  • Prior publication of photos or multimedia is NOT required.
     
  • No entries will be accepted in print form, although winning entries will need to be printed by the photographer for entry into the show.
     
  • The judges or contest chair reserve the right to re-categorize photos to modify these rules as they see fit. But do not expect judges to re-categorize misfiled images.
     
  • By entering the contest the photographer gives permission to reproduce the photo(s) in the Corsair News and the PPAGLA publications and web site. Copyrights remain with the photographer.
     
  • Entries must include caption information. Incomplete captions or factual errors will disqualify the entry.
     
  • Images without original metadata information will be disqualified.
     
  • Images and stories must be produced within accepted visual journalism practices.

Include the following information under the Photoshop "File Info" for each image.

Basic Window

  • Description: This is where the caption is inserted. 

Image title or story title followed by complete caption. (DO NOT include your name.) Captions must answer the five news questions, who, what, where, when and why.

Print preparation

Print Quality: Highest possible

Image Size: 14 inches vertical or horizontal. Use submitted crop of image.

Matting: no larger than 16 x 20 with a backing that will not bend when on wall.

Caption: two 2x4 adhesive stickers with complete caption and photo credit. Attach one to back of matte, the other will be used on the wall.
